Retrospective: Kicking Off Mongolia’s First Decentralized Tech Week
In September 2025, Mongolia launched its inaugural Tech Week, co-initiated and organized by Fibo Cloud, Startup Mongolia, and the Information Technology Park (IT Park).
Taking direct inspiration from the decentralized, community-driven a16z Tech Week model seen in tech hubs like San Francisco and New York, Tech Week 2025 was deliberately designed to break away from conventional, monolithic conferences. Instead, it empowered community hosts, tech companies, and ecosystem builders to organize their own independent, hyper-focused events across Ulaanbaatar.
To set the momentum for the entire week, we opened with “Kickstart”—the official opening and icebreaker event that brought together the nation's core founders, operators, and ecosystem architects.
What Was Covered at "Kickstart"
Hosted collaboratively by Fibo Cloud and Startup Mongolia at IT Park, the opening session set the stage for candid discussions on where Mongolia's tech sector came from and where it is heading next:
- The Evolution of Mongolia’s Startup Ecosystem: Startup Mongolia reflected on the milestones, structural shifts, and community efforts that built the domestic ecosystem over the past decade.
- Fibo’s Export Playbook: Fibo Cloud shared raw, actionable lessons on scaling beyond borders—covering the operational, technical, and strategic hurdles of exporting cloud infrastructure and digital health platforms across Central and South Asia.
- Decentralized Community Networking: Founders, developers, venture partners, and policymakers connected in an open, unscripted environment designed to spark cross-company collaboration throughout the rest of the week.
The Power of Decentralization
"Kickstart" did more than break the ice; it established the spirit of what Tech Week was built to represent: by founders, for founders. By distributing ownership across multiple venues, partners, and event tracks—from venture fireside chats to technical workshops—the decentralized format proved that Mongolia’s tech ecosystem thrives best when driven by open collaboration rather than a top-down agenda.
